That stands for Keith And The Girl.

Keith And The Girl (KATG) seems to be quite the popular and growing in popularity podcast out of New York. Alison is quite the fan. She knows all the characters and stories and follows the show daily, although a day behind. While recently in New York, they, KATG, were having a DVD release party for their fourth DVD called "All Over The Place." We were told going to a New York Podcast DVD release party was a very New York thing to do. So we did!

It was in a very New York place too, the East Village! Of course Arngee was in tow. It was a great fun evening. Met many people and some even recognized and embraced Arngee being there too.

I wish I could tell you all the people in these photos. The best I can do is top row left to right: Keith and the Girl (Chemda); Spooky; Jameira and The Girl (perhaps a spin off?). Bottom row: Unknown, The Girl, Keith, Brother Love and an unknown female; Brother Love's gal (perhaps Sister Love) and Patrice; lastly Matthew Bray (an SU alum who knows Saxon!)

And we even won a free DVD of their show, for being the person that traveled the furthest to be at the party, and the Aquaman dvd! Suck on that!

I know it has been a while, and Arngee has been lying low. But this past weekend he was out on the town in the Big Apple.

Phylicia Rashad, not Claire Huxtable or Mrs. Cosby, is currently starring on Broadway in Cat On A Hot Tin Roof with Terrence Howard, Annika Noni Rose and James Earl Jones and directed by her sister Debbie Allen. She graciously took a stage exit visit to stop by and see Arngee.

Grand Rapids invaded Illinois when Kendall College of Art and Design came down Chicago way for some studio visits and rambling through downtown!

Highlights included tours of Grip Design, Perkins + Will and Eva Maddox, the MCA, and Columbia College Chicago. But there was no greater highlight than seeing the little orange intrepid one. . .Arngee!

TDA started from scratch 18 years ago as a design firm working with small companies they believed in. Their common-sense approach has allowed them to become a successful creative branding shop, which specializes in nothing and tries to be good at everything—from design to advertising and everything in between.

Tom Doyle, the "T" and "D" in TDA, noticed a rather close connection in the color of Arngee and the orange, or rather, coral of Crocs.

Vermilion is about as Boulder as it comes: they're big into natural products, nonprofits, educational and environmental projects. Clients include Twenty Ninth Street retail center, IZZE beverages, and the University of Colorado. Their work spans the gamut from identity to packaging to web design. The sixteen person firm occupies a striking two-story wide-open studio.

After meeting Arngee, Bob Morehouse, creative director/owner, considered changing the name of the firm to Orange!

Wells Fargo Theatre

The Wells Fargo Theatre at the Denver Conference Center was homebase for all the general sessions of the AIGA conference. As you can see, Arngee was all up in it, attentively watching speakers as diverse as Janine Benyus, Kurt Anderson, Denver Art Museum Architect Daniel Libeskind, Katherine and Michael mcCoy, Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper, Paul Bunditz, Illustrator Christopher Niemann, Momus, Maira Kalman, Khoi Vin, Alex Steffan, and Blaise Aguire y Arcas. He also witnessed Debbie Millman hosting 20/20 and the crowning of the Command X winner, although they were all winners!

Denver - AIGA National Design Conference

WOW! So many people know Arngee. Little introduction has to be given these days.

Here Arngee is with Marian Bantjes, who was with someone who immediately recognized Arngee and explained, "That is the mascot form Syracuse!" I did not have to say anything more.

Marian Bantjes, a self-described graphic artist, was a book typesetter for 10 years and a designer for nine, but since 2003 she has pursued her artistic and typographic obsessions. Complex, structured, sometimes funny and always obsessive, her illustrations have appeared in magazines such as Eye, STEP, Wallpaper, WIRED, Print and Communication Arts. Although based on a small island near Vancouver, Canada, she stays connected with an impressive array of collaborators and clients, including Stefan Sagmeister, Michael Bierut, Saks Fifth Avenue and Young & Rubicam. Since 2004 Bantjes has also been a contributor to the design blog Speak Up, where her posts range from quirky musings to profane rants. She hopes to be living proof of what happens when you work for love, not money.

Is this Paris or Cleveland? I.M Pei designed both the Louvre and the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame. I think you can see the similarities!

Chicago had their cows, and other states had their icons as public sculpture, Cleveland has larger than life guitars. And of course there was an orange Fender that Arngee just could not resist! The bus in the background was Johnny Cash's tour bus on view at the museum.

Elise Woodward, Designer at Iconologic in Atlanta where "Risk more. Presume intelligence. Inspire emotion. Sell the truth" is their mantra.

I am not quite sure who was more impressed with each other, Elise with Arngee or myself with Elise. Elise is the designer responsible for the amazing, AMAZING Torino Olympic design.

Elise had a stack of papers on a file cabinet, that ended up being some of the thumbnails for the Torino games. They were works of art. I would frame them if I could! Just check them out!

Arngee had quite the time at the HOW Conference in Georgia. After all, I would say the orange and peach are cousins.

Chip Kidd, book cover designer extraordinaire, had one of the best presentations, but why wouldn't he. There were many other highlights too. I was surprised when he knew exactly who Arngee was. When asked he said he went to Penn State and saw much of Arngee in his college days.

I handed him our little orange fellow and Chip popped him in his mouth! Shockingly, Arngee looks like a strange orange ball gag! Um. . .okay!

While in Hawaii, Arngee visited the island of Kauai. Neither he nor I have even been to the Grand Canyon, but that is what they compare the Waimea Canyon to. It is on the west side of the island, the dry side (the east side is much more lush and tropical).

The Kalalau Lookout is the highest lookout at 4000' at the north end of the canyon as it opens up to the ocean.

This wasn't a grand canyon, but it was pretty great!

Cold ruins nearly $1B of California citrus

That is "B" as in BILLIONS.

Shoppers soon will be feeling the sting of higher prices from a wave of icy weather that has hit California farms. As much as three-quarters of the state's citrus crop withered in the field during the cold snap, but nearly every winter crop, from avocados to fresh-cut flowers, has suffered severely.

California is the nation's No. 1 producer of fresh citrus, growing about 86 percent of lemons and 21 percent of oranges sold in the U.S., according to the California Farm Bureau. Florida produces more citrus overall, mostly for use in orange juice, according to the USDA.

Growers say more than 70 percent of this season's oranges, lemons and tangerines were still on the trees as nighttime temperatures in California's Central Valley dipped into the low 20s and teens beginning Friday. The fruit is threatened whenever the mercury falls below 28 degrees.

"Limited amounts were harvested before the freeze, so it's not like the markets are going to dry up suddenly," said Claire Smith, a spokeswoman for Sunkist Growers Inc., a Los Angeles-based cooperative owned by some 6,000 growers in California and Arizona.

Still, the diminished supply is bound to drive up prices, Smith said. Sunkist may import oranges and other fruit from South Africa and other countries.

"We may adjust the prices as we discover the full extent of the damage next week, but for now, if you bought an orange at the supermarket for 50 cents, expect to pay a dollar to $1.49 for it," said Todd Steel, owner of Royal Vista Marketing, which sells California citrus to markets throughout the country.

A project produced by Mattmo was this book, Orange on the Inside for TNT employees.

The concept was: 12 TNT people reveal what it means to be 'orange on the inside' through their daily work. TNT took these 12 to Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, Africa. As Mount Kilimanjaro symbolises TNT in many ways, it forms the inspiring background for the stories of the 12 people.

I can understand why some may see it as an unauthorized biography of our beloved Arngee!

Otto is Arngee's real name. We did not know that when we, the Class of 04, discovered him in the summer of 02. Otto seems stodgy, like an old man smoking a stogy! Arngee fits. But there is a story behind the name and I thought I would share it.

How Otto the Orange Got His Name

In the early 1980's it was time again to look for a new sports mascot. Several cadidates were taken under consideration, including a penguin with an orange scarf, an orangutan, the Abominable Orangeman, the Orangeman, Egnaro the Troll and an Orange. In the end, it was a warm, fuzzy and lovable Orange (known by several names through the years) that won the day. Despite recent attempts to give him a facelift, Otto has remained the same and is here to stay.

The mascot was known as "The Orange" until 1990 when the name Otto first came into use. The first Orange costume was dubbed "Clyde" by the Lambda Chi Alpha brothers, and the second called "Woody." In 1990 a third costume was being produced and needed a name. The cheerleaders were at Cheerleading Camp in Tennessee that summer and narrowed the field down to two potential names - Opie or Otto. Figuring the name Opie would lead to the inevitable rhyme with 'dopey', they settled on Otto. Later that Fall, word got out that the cheerleaders were calling the latest mascot costume, Otto and the name stuck.

Since it seems so arbitrary, I say we make a movement to rename him once again!

The Tribune Tower is one of the most beautiful buildings in Chicago. And of course a must see sight for our intrepid traveler Arngee!

Some information on the Tower.

This design was the result of an international competition for "the most beautiful office building in the world," held in 1922 by the Chicago Tribune newspaper. The various competition entries proved extremely influential for the development of skyscraper architecture in the 1920s. The winning entry, with a crowning tower with flying buttresses, is derived from the design of the French cathedral of Rouen and gives the building its striking silhouette. The base of the building is studded with over 120 stones from famed sites and structures in all 50 states and dozens of foreign countries. They range from the Parthenon (Greece) and Taj Mahal (India) to Bunker Hill (Massachusetts) and Mark Twain's "Injun Joe Cave" (Missouri).

Made famous by John Belushi during the hey day of Saturday Night Live and visited by Arngee in Chicago, home of the Cheezborger with Chips and Coke!

It still remains and has all the charm that it always has. It is located on lower Michigan avenue. That was LOWER, as in below the city! That's what gives it all its charm.

It aint quite the same place it once was with reporters from the local newspapers hanging out for a cheap lunch and a smoke. It has gone the way of the tourist! They even have opened up other Billy Goats around the city, but nothing like the original!

Arngee was recently in Harrisburg to judge the Addys in Central PA. Well, he really wasn't a judge as much as he was there during the judging.

The Traveling Vineyard has arrived to demystify the wine-buying experience through in-home wine tastings where people get to explore their palate for fine wine and become more confident in their choices. Think of it as a Tuppperware Party but with wine!

I hosted a party last Sunday and it was a blast. Having someone come to your house with wine. All I had to do was invite friends and have some snacks! Sweet!

On O'ahu you have Pearl Harbor, the North Shore and Diamond Head. Arngee made it to all three. Here he is taking in the sun inside the crater.

Pearl Habor was a must stop while on O'ahu. Since a candid of Arngee would be highly inappropriate on the memorial, we settled for a photo op out front.

Mark, Arngee and I partook in the island tradition of a luau. Make sure you say luau not lua as that is a bathroom!

Germaine's Luau is little more than Vegas gone Hawaiin! Entertaining, plenty of food, think the $1 buffets of Vegas.

Other words of note. Pupu is appetizers, pipi is beef. Having a party and serving pupu and pipi is common in Hawaii!

Laeahi

A Sunday whale watch cruise netted little more than some spinner dolphins, flying fish, a cruise from Aloha Tower to Koko Head and some great views of Laeahi.

Named Laeahi by the ancient Hawaiians, the most famous volcanic crater in the world is Diamond Head, located on the South-east Coast of O'ahu at the end of Waikiki overlooking the Pacific Ocean. The name meant "brow of the tuna" and looking at the silhouette of the crater from Waikiki, you can see the resemblance. The current name came was given to the crater by British sailors in the 1800's. When they first saw the crater at a great distance, the calcite crystals in the lava rock appeared to glimmer in the sunlight. The sailors mistakenly thought there must be diamonds in the soil.

And that is the Hawai'i lesson of the day.

Lots of people have told me that an orange makes a pretty stupid mascot. That an orange would not instill fear in the opposing team! Well, I have always said nay to that!

And then, I received a banana slug that is the mascot for University of California Santa Cruz (UCSC). A slug! They do not even move fast! You could pelt the opposing team with oranges, but have you ever thrown a slug? They are soft, they would not hurt all that much and only if you got someone in the eye, I understand the slime they produce can be an irritant.

I have researched best I can to see if the slug has a name. The best I uncovered was they are called the Fighting Banana Slugs. Fighting?! I guess the one admirable quality about slugs that I know is if you ever find them in your garden, if you place a shallow dish with beer in it, they will be attracted to it and eventually drown when they climb in for a sip! That's right, they love beer so much, they will drown in it. They cannot help themselves!

I have no idea what that title means or what it has to do with this picture.

Arngee spent some time in Amish country, Lancaster, PA to be exact. The Amish are not to be photographed. So how was this image captured. The story goes she had to go off to the side of the road behind some trees so as not to be seen having her picture taken. I do not know what happens when that picture is then put up on the internet for display.

After the picture was taken, she wanted to go back and make a nice jelly out of Arngee. She asked "He's an orange, no?"

Arngee loves the holiday season. A couple years back he spent the whole year hanging on a tree in Ohio with the Gragers. This year, his likeness hangs on a tree in Chicago.

This is Steve O'Connell meeting Arngee and surrounded by SU Ad Design undergrads.

Steve spent the last 6 years honing his skills at a little shop called Crispin Porter + Bogusky. CP+B was named Agency of the Year three of the last five years by Creativity magazine. . .coincidence? In 2005, Steve started his own shop called Stick and Move. Check it out at www.stickandmove.com.

Aside from working on IKEA, Burger King, Virgin Atlantic and the American Legacy "truth" campaign, Steve also helped launch the MINI Cooper. He was the youngest Associate Creative Director CP+B ever had. Everybody from Creativity, the One Show, Cannes, Clios Entertainment Weekly and The Daily Show have recognized his work.

It was only a matter of time until Steve met Arngee.
